Artist Statement
Shanna is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in painting and drawing. Born in Hong Kong and now based in the UK. Their practice explores pain, memory, emotion, and embodied experience, drawing from personal encounters alongside broader philosophical and social questions.
Working mainly with oil and acrylic, Shanna incorporates charcoal as an essential part of their process, embracing its rawness, immediacy, and expressive quality. They are particularly drawn to feminine figures, human faces, and bodily presence, often placed within ambiguous or ethereal spaces.
Influenced by philosophy, religion, and mythology, their work considers questions of suffering, happiness, vulnerability, and the human condition. Rather than romanticising pain, Shanna explores how confronting difficult emotions can contribute to understanding, resilience, and wholeness.
Their experience of moving from Hong Kong to the UK has also shaped an ongoing interest in identity, self-definition, and the courage to pursue an artistic life.
